- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2023Platform For Display: PlayStation 4Verified PurchaseEndling: Extinction is Forever cannot be recommend enough. I hope this brief review does not give away any spoilers, but it is one of those games that you just want to discuss after you “beat” it. I quote “beat” because by the end, you simply do not feel that way.
I have been gaming since the Atari 2600 and have played, like many people, too many games to count. I can count on one hand how many have made me tear up or cry, and Endling is now one of them. The entire game itself will have you sad, but the ending hits hard. Upon starting the game, you may wonder if there is a genuinely good story here, and if you do play through the entire game and unlock all the story segments to include rescuing a non-fox baby (again, no spoilers) and having all your cubs survive, the entire story it tells will sit with you for a long, long time.
There is a main antagonist in the game, but I’d cautious people to remember that an antagonist does not mean “bad guy.” This game is right up there with The Last of Us Part 2 in terms of making you sit back and truly wrestle with the material and realize that the “other side” may just not be as “bad” as the beginning might lead you to believe.
Beyond a great story, it’s an important story that might very well make you want to jump in to help the planet, even if only in a minor way in whatever you can personally do.
The visuals, sound, music, controls, and everything else is perfect. It’s a shorter game as I beat it in one six hour sitting. It is also not too difficult. There are portions here and there where one of your children could starve to death, but without any guides or videos, I still managed to have all of them survive until the end though once or twice it got VERY close. I was also able to rescue the fourth cub, and without giving away spoilers, I will at least say that each day where a purple trail appears, follow it immediately to get the story to unfold and ensure you rescue your baby by the end. Also, again no spoilers, there comes a time early on where you can rescue another animal – DO IT. Later in the game, you will be able to rescue her child, so ensure you do that, too. It’s WELL worth the time and effort. If you miss doing it, reload the save before the day ends, and you can try again. Again, no spoilers, but it all pays off.
I will leave it at that as going further would spoiler a gut punch of a story and the ending. This game will stay with you, and you will be thinking about it. I hope for some sort of follow up, even if just a “spiritual sequel” not directly related to this game. Still, they have created an amazingly interesting world where you could do stories set after or before this particular story, and I would be there for it.
